Two weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina, I traveled to Asheville and Swannanoa to document the ongoing relief efforts of Savage Freedoms Relief Operation, a nonprofit led by special operations veterans. As roads remained impassable and communities struggled with the storm’s aftermath, the organization worked to reach those still cut off by the destruction. These photos primarily follow the cadaver dog team, moving through towering debris, barking to signal life—or death—beneath the wreckage.
